John D. Villani leads Grumman/Butkus Associates field services encompassing new construction, existing building and on-going commissioning services, troubleshooting and forensics, and energy study and modeling services activities for Grumman/Butkus Associates, an energy efficiency consulting and sustainable design engineering firm headquartered in Evanston, IL. John has 20 years of engineering consulting experience providing design, energy, commissioning, and existing building commissioning services. John additionally has 9 years of experience previously working with both Johnson Controls, implementing multimillion-dollar energy conservation performance contracts and controls projects, and as a staff member of Columbia University’s facilities operations and building operations departments. John is a Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP) with a background of Owner, Contractor, and Consultant which influences his hands on – value added perspective as a commissioning team leader and overseeing Grumman/Butkus Associates as a Certified Commissioning Firm (CCF). His expertise has also been enhanced by the experience of working in several of the country’s major cities, including New York, Chicago, Detroit, and Los Angles. John earned his undergraduate degree at SUNY Maritime College, one of the country’s Merchant Marine colleges, as well as his US Merchant Marines 3rd Assistant Engineer license from the US Coast Guard. He is a licensed professional engineer in several states and is an active member of the Building Commissioning Association (BCxA), ASHRAE and the Association of Energy Engineers. John’s passion for the commissioning industry is clearly demonstrated having been the Past President of the BCxA’s International Board of Directors as well as the Past President of the association’s Central Chapter. He also serves on the BCxA’s Best Practices Committee and was chairperson for the update and re-write of the Existing Building Best Practices, and is the 2019 recipient of the BCxA President’s Award, recognizing outstanding service to the association.
